Flag: Burkina Faso 🇧🇫 Emoji: Meaning & Usage
The flag of Burkina Faso, a landlocked country in West Africa whose name translates to 'Land of Incorruptible People' in the local Mossi and Dyula languages. The flag features two horizontal stripes—red on top and green on the bottom—with a five-pointed yellow star in the center. The red symbolizes the revolution and the blood shed for independence, the green represents agricultural abundance and hope, and the yellow star represents the guiding light of the revolution and the country's mineral wealth.
The flag was adopted on August 4, 1984, when revolutionary leader Captain Thomas Sankara (often called 'Africa's Che Guevara') renamed the country from 'Upper Volta.' Sankara was a charismatic Marxist revolutionary who launched ambitious programs in just four years before being assassinated in a coup in 1987. The country is internationally celebrated for hosting FESPACO, the largest African film festival held every two years in the capital Ouagadougou. Other attractions include the UNESCO Ruins of Loropéni and the unique painted houses of Tiébélé.
