The flag of Barbados, an island country in the eastern Caribbean Sea. The flag consists of three equal vertical bands of blue, gold, and blue, with a black trident head in the center of the gold band. The blue represents the sea and sky, while the gold symbolizes the golden sandy beaches. The black trident head, known as the 'broken trident,' is deliberately depicted as broken from its shaft to symbolize the historic break with the country's colonial past. The trident's three points represent the three principles of democracy: government 'of the people, by the people, and for the people.' Adopted on November 30, 1966, the day of independence from Britain.

In November 2021, Barbados made history by becoming a republic, removing Queen Elizabeth II as head of state. With a population of about 280,000, Barbados is internationally famous as the birthplace of global music superstar Rihanna. The country is also the birthplace of rum—the world's oldest rum distillery, Mount Gay Rum, has operated continuously since 1703. Cricket is the national passion.
