The flag of Bangladesh, a South Asian country with one of the highest population densities in the world. The flag features a deep green field with a red disc slightly off-center toward the hoist (so that it appears centered when the flag is flying in the wind). The red disc represents both the rising sun over Bengal and the blood shed by Bangladeshis during the brutal 1971 War of Independence from Pakistan, while the green field symbolizes the lush green countryside and Islam. The flag was adopted on January 17, 1972. The country has a population of approximately 170 million, making it the world's eighth most populous nation.

Bangladesh sits on the world's largest delta, formed by the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna rivers. Bengali (Bangla) is the official language. UNESCO World Heritage Sites include the Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest and home to the Bengal tiger. Bangladesh is famous for vibrant cultural heritage including colorful cycle rickshaws, rich Bengali cuisine, and Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.
