Flag: American Samoa 🇦🇸 Emoji: Meaning & Usage
The flag of American Samoa, an unincorporated territory of the United States located in the South Pacific. The flag has a unique design featuring a white triangle pointing toward the hoist on a red field, with a blue field above and below. Inside the white triangle is an American bald eagle holding two traditional Samoan symbols: a 'uatogi' (a war club representing strength) and a 'fue' (a fly whisk symbolizing chiefly authority). The eagle facing the symbols represents the protective relationship between the United States and Samoa. The flag was adopted on April 17, 1960, which became Flag Day. American Samoa consists of five main volcanic islands with a population of approximately 45,000. Its inhabitants have a unique political status: they are 'U.S.
Nationals' rather than U.S. citizens—the only group of people in the U.S. with this status. American Samoa has the highest per-capita military enlistment rate of any U.S. state or territory and produces numerous NFL players relative to its small population. The territory preserves 'Fa'a Samoa' (the Samoan way) emphasizing extended family and respect for chiefs.
