Flag: Burundi 🇧🇮 Emoji: Meaning & Usage
The flag of Burundi, a small landlocked country in the African Great Lakes region of East Africa. The flag features a distinctive design with a white diagonal cross dividing the field into four sections: red on top and bottom, and green on the left and right sides. In the center, a white disc contains three red six-pointed stars outlined in green. The three stars represent the three major ethnic groups of Burundi—the Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa—as well as the national motto 'Unité, Travail, Progrès' (Unity, Work, Progress). Red represents the blood of those who died for independence, green symbolizes hope and the natural environment, and white represents peace and unity.
The flag was adopted on March 28, 1967. Burundi is one of the smallest countries in continental Africa but one of the most densely populated. The country gained independence from Belgium on July 1, 1962. Burundi is internationally famous for its Royal Drummers, a UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage tradition where male performers carry massive sacred drums on their heads.
