The flag is a British Blue Ensign defaced with the coat of arms of Ascension Island, which features a shield depicting the island's silhouette, a green sea turtle, and a frigate bird. The green turtle is one of the island's most important wildlife species, with Ascension being one of the world's largest green turtle nesting grounds.

Ascension Island is a volcanic island covering 88 square kilometers with a population of about 800. Today the island serves as a strategically important military base and communications relay station.
