A stop button — the solid square that ends playback completely, returning to the initial state rather than just pausing. Unlike pause (which preserves position), stop ends the current playback session.

'Stop what you're doing' is more absolute than 'pause.' Stop signs and stop buttons share the finality of complete cessation. Used for media player control discussions, the complete ending of a process or activity (not just pausing), emphatic requests to cease an ongoing action, and any context where the distinction between temporary suspension and complete termination matters.
