A torii gate — the distinctive red lacquered archway that marks the entrance to Shinto sacred spaces and has become one of Japan's most instantly recognizable cultural symbols worldwide. The torii marks the threshold between the mundane world and sacred space, and passing through one is a physical act of entering into contact with the divine. Fushimi Inari Taisha's thousands of orange torii tunneling through the forested hillside is one of Japan's most photographed experiences.
