A peace symbol — the circle with a vertical line and inverted V that began as the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) emblem in 1958 and became the universal symbol for peace, anti-war movements, and non-violence worldwide. Designed by Gerald Holtom using the semaphore signals for N and D (nuclear disarmament), the symbol spread globally during the 1960s peace movement and Vietnam War protests, becoming one of the most recognizable symbols of the 20th century.

'Peace out' and two-finger peace signs connect to this symbol's countercultural legacy. Used for peace advocacy, anti-war and non-violence content, progressive politics, the 1960s countercultural aesthetic, and any genuine expression of the wish for peaceful resolution of conflict.
