The flag of Australia, a country and continent in the Southern Hemisphere. The flag features a dark blue field with three main elements: the Union Jack in the upper hoist quadrant (representing Australia's history as a former British colony), a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it (its seven points represent the six states and the territories collectively), and on the fly side the Southern Cross constellation depicted with five white stars. The dark blue represents the seas surrounding the island continent. The flag was chosen in a public competition in 1901 following Australia's federation.

The Commonwealth of Australia is the world's sixth-largest country by area at 7.7 million square kilometers, the only country that occupies an entire continent. Due to long isolation, Australia has evolved a remarkable array of unique wildlife including kangaroos, koalas, wombats, and platypuses. UNESCO World Heritage Sites include the Great Barrier Reef, Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, and the Sydney Opera House.
